The Coming Hautian Housing Crisis

Spring 2007: For the first time in history, Rose-Hulman begins paying upperclassmen to live off-campus.

Fall 2007: Terre Haute runs out of rental properties.

Could this happen? Depends on how many people are really forced off of campus, and how many Hautians remain in their existing housing. Based on national home sales in the first part of 2007, it does seem likely that very few places will be going up for sale. This probably has a ripple effect on rental properties. We also must factor in how many graduating seniors are leaving town, and when they will leave. Apparently not very many are leaving right this moment, so maybe they'll leave by the end of the summer. Only time will tell at this point, but I can see an acute shortage of available rentals in August when I actually need to find a place there...but the good news is that the Rose students usually stay away from shady looking places like I lived in last year, so maybe I could get back in there.
